Dan mumford - illustrator

Dan mumford is an illustrator I've looked at for quite a while and i have wanted to use links to his work with in a project for some time and now with my link to music and looking into CD covers and thier designers. Dan Mumford is the designer for my favourite album art off the album "homesick" by "A Day To Remember" which i will try to recreate as best as i can in a critical study using either ink or acrylic paint.

Here is some of his work along with the album cover work

typography mood board

in this piece i have created a mood board on text, using fonts which i liked and found that were related to the types of music i wanted to include in my art work like the "serial font" and the "another America" font which are quite rock and punk based along with fonts like "dry brush" and "surfing capital", the rebellious type of music. other fonts like "COLLEGE" and "urban jungle" are more pop and RnB based with their bold and block like structure.

I plan to look into more fonts and more into fonts used on album covers of the music which i gathered from my primary research from friends and family through a questionnaire. i also plan to look into different websites that show different fonts instead of just using the one website "defont.com".

Cris Wick - artist research

Cris Wicks is a designer whose works you have more than likely seen being featured around the web with his use of breathtaking typography in his amazing portraits which tend to catch the eye no matter their surroundings. Using a popular technique to create a portrait out of words, Cris has created some truly inspiring works that rank high in most folk’s favourites.

for my critical studies i have used acrylic paint to re create some of his portraits, to continue my studies in his work i will print out a copy of my piece and add in the lyrics with a pen as i want to keep my critical studies to the highest standard i can and don't want to risk ruining them.

Cris Wicks work has to be some of my favourite pieces of work i have found during my research and i think i will use his technique to a certain point with in my work.

Debra Hurd - artist research

Artist Debra Hurd studied art at both Southern University in Chattanooga, Tennessee and the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. For 15 years she was a graphic designer in Florida and Austin, Texas. She is also an accomplished pianist, having studied music since early childhood, which is good in my research as my project is all about art and music. She loves jazz, classical, and salsa styles.

As a painter, Debra Hurd is famous for her insightful paintings of animals, her vivid city scenes and her passionate and perceptive depictions of jazz, rock, and blues musicians. Being a musician, she has both a great respect and a feel for the emotions of musicians of the past and present. She works in oils, using a knife to get bold and instant color. She finds the knife to be a great tool of expression. She reaches the observer through the use of dramatic color and texture.

with in my critical studies i have used a paint brush as i am not confident with a pallet knife and i have used acrylic paint instead of oils as this is what i am most comfortable with. i plan to experiment with oil paints and pallet knives to show i have used her style in experimentation but to make sure my research and pieces are to a high standard i want to use materials and equipment that i am comfortable with.

Carnival of madness show

Here are some images from the carnival of madness for my primary research.
Images from the carnival of madness show, some of the bands performing live. Halestorm, Shinedown and Black stone cherry along with some images of the crowd to capture the atmosphere at the gig.

Here are some videos from the show:

Primary Research

For my primary research i am using some images and videos I gathered from the live music event " the carnival of madness" which i went to on the 5th of February. From the event i wanted to gather information on how music effects people when listening to it live and in a concert or festival like environment. Form the event i felt that listening to the music live gives you a feeling of being part of something bigger with everyone jumping round, having a great time and singing along... It made me and my friend feel amazing, its an experience and feeling you only get from a live event, where as listening to it in your room is a little boring, sometimes it is great to just relax or rock out to your favourite songs but when in a live environment it just makes the feeling way better. For more primary research I then asked friends and family on what thier favourite song was, what made it thier favourite song and what it reminded them of, i also asked for a memorable set of lyrics, some that meant a lot to them and if they follewed them as part of thier lifestyle or why they were so special.

Unit 13 FMP Symbolism in lyrics

For my final unit, number 13 I will be basing my project on "symbolism in lyrics". Through the project i will be looking into art based on the image you picture when you read or listen to the lyrics of a song, how the song makes you feel, what certain songs mean to people and how people interoperate lyrics differently. I also want to use the 3D workshop in my project and create a final piece in the workshop too, thinking about a guitar body with etched in lyrics or maybe a sculpted body with other 3D elements to the piece as well.
